Jhapa, September 16
A wild elephant was found dead this morning in a paddy field at Telpani in Mechinagar Municipality-3.
Nathuni Gohiwar Yadav, chief of the Division Forest Office, said a team from the office had been dispatched to the site.
He said locals reported the death after spotting the carcass of an adult tusker in the paddy field. The cause of death is not yet known, he said.
Wild elephants have long been causing heavy damage to human life and farmers’ crops in wards 2, 3, 4 and 5 of Mechinagar.
Large numbers of wild elephants cross the Mechi River from forests in India to graze in Jhapa, while the number of resident elephants living in local forests has also risen in recent years.
According to Division Forest Office records, 28 wild elephants have been found dead in various parts of Jhapa over the past 16 years.
