Wild boars declared agricultural pest

Kathmandu, February 24

The government has re-declared wild boars as agricultural pests for another year. The Ministry of Forests and Environment published a notice in the gazette on Monday, making it easier to drive away or capture wild boars.

Under this classification, if wild boars enter private fields, farms, or orchards and cause damage, they can be driven away, captured, or killed without prior permission, following the conditions set by the ministry.

However, the facilitation does not include small or young boars, the ministry clarified. Farmers, individually or collectively, are allowed to take action against boars that damage crops or property.

Captured boars must be handed over to the relevant national park, wildlife reserve, or forest office. If a boar is killed during the process, a record must be made in the presence of one ward representative and five residents. Its value is to be calculated based on weight, deposited into the ward’s revenue account, and can be used locally for non-commercial purposes.

All actions and information must be reported to the concerned authorities, who are responsible for maintaining the records. Hunting, capturing, or driving away wild animals within national parks, wildlife reserves, or forest-protected areas remains strictly prohibited.

Earlier, the government had also declared red monkeys as agricultural pests.
