Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) General Secretary Bipin Kumar Acharya has objected to a video of the parents of three-year-old Garima Chaudhary being recorded at the Ministry of Home Affairs, saying such practices should stop.
Speaking during Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Acharya said the incident involving Garima should also prompt a broader discussion about the kind of society Nepal is creating.
“I have not said much about what happened in the Garima murder case. But something we all need to reflect on is what kind of society we are building,” he said.
“We have reached a situation where a video of the deceased’s parents saying thank you is recorded at a ministry. And when a medical examination is being conducted, things said by an accused are publicly released. This kind of society must be stopped,” he said.
Garima’s disappearance and death
According to police, three-year-old Garima Chaudhary of Jeetpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City-1 went missing from her home on the morning of August 16.
Her mother, Manmati Chaudhary, informed police in Simara and Pathlaiya after she could not find the child for around three and a half hours.
Police reportedly told the family that they would search for her. Garima’s body was found two days later.
The case drew attention from the federal government after the body of the three-year-old, who had disappeared from her home, was recovered.
Garima’s father Manoj Chaudhary and mother Manmati Chaudhary were subsequently called to Kathmandu, where they held discussions with Home Minister Sudhan Gurung and officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
During the meeting, Manoj expressed satisfaction with the government’s initiative, saying that the authorities had listened to the family’s concerns.
Objection to public release of accused’s video
Acharya also objected to the public release of a video showing an accused person speaking about the incident.
A video of the person arrested in connection with Garima’s murder was made public, showing police questioning the accused during a medical examination at a hospital.
The footage shows the accused, who is handcuffed, being questioned by police officers.
“There is a situation where what an accused says is publicly released. This kind of society must be stopped,” Acharya said.
The public release of the video has also drawn the attention of the Nepal Police headquarters and the Madhesh Province Police Office, which have begun looking into the circumstances surrounding the footage.
Acharya raised the issue in Parliament amid growing concerns over the handling and public dissemination of material related to the case.
