Vegetable traders say sorry after attacking govt monitoring team, shops found at fault sealed

Balkhu-Tarakari-Bajar

Kathmandu, July 5

Trades based in the Balkhu vegetables market have offered an apology after attacking a government team under Supplies Minister Ganesh Man Pun, while it was monitoring the market, on Tuesday. They apologised in course of talks with the team.

The team has sealed the vegetable shops found at fault in course of monitoring.

Earlier in the day, vegetable traders attacked the team with water bottles and vegetables after it seized weights and balances, which the traders were using without bothering to get a certification from the Department of Standards and Metrology. Arjun Kumar Pathak, personal secretary of Minister Pun, said the traders had prevented the team from doing its job pointing that it should have informed them about monitoring ‘in advance’.

The traders had sought their weights and balances back, promising to certify them from the department within a week.

They had said they were unaware of the law, which makes certification of the weights and balances mandatory before their use.

The team had conducted monitoring amid increasing complaints from customers that unscrupulous traders were cheating them and selling vegetables containing pesticides in excess.
