USA tops medal tally at Paris 2024 Olympics, surpassing China

The United States has claimed the top spot in the medal tally at the Paris 2024 Olympics, edging out China in a fiercely competitive race that lasted until the final day of the Games.

The Olympics, which spanned over two weeks, saw intense competition between the USA and China, both vying for the leading position in the medal standings. The USA ultimately secured its victory on the last day, thanks to a dramatic gold medal win in women’s basketball.

In a nail-biting final, the American women’s basketball team triumphed over host nation France with a narrow 67-66 victory. This crucial win allowed the USA to surpass China in the medal rankings.

Both the USA and China finished with 40 gold medals each. However, the USA emerged as the overall leader due to its higher count of silver medals, ending the Games with a total of 126 medals—40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze.

China secured second place with a total of 91 medals—40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze.

Japan, another strong contender from Asia, finished third with 45 medals—20 gold, 12 silver, and 13 bronze.

Australia came in fourth with 53 medals, including 18 gold, 19 silver, and 16 bronze. The host nation, France, rounded out the top five with 64 medals—16 gold, 26 silver, and 22 bronze.

The Paris 2024 Olympics saw participation from 206 nations, with 91 of them winning at least one medal, highlighting the global reach and competitive spirit of the Games.
