Transformer thefts are increasing across Madhesh Province, disrupting irrigation, drinking water projects and electricity services while putting additional financial pressure on the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
A 100 kVA transformer installed for irrigation in Aurahi Municipality-1, Mahottari, was stolen on the night of August 12. The theft has left local farmers struggling to irrigate their paddy fields amid inadequate rainfall.
Similar incidents have been reported in Dhanusha. A transformer installed for a drinking water project in Kshireshwarnath Municipality-9 was recently stolen while the project was preparing to begin operations. In Mithila Municipality-2, Naktajhij, thieves removed another drinking water transformer from its pole and stole its oil and coils. Despite being welded to prevent theft, the transformer was stolen after the welding was cut. The incident disrupted water supply for four days.
According to the Madhesh Province Police Office, 33 transformers were stolen in fiscal year 2082/83 BS. Mahottari recorded the highest number with 11 thefts, followed by Saptari with seven, Dhanusha and Bara with four each, Sarlahi with three, Siraha with two and Rautahat with one.
A total of 101 transformers were stolen across Madhesh between fiscal years 2078/79 BS and 2082/83 BS.
NEA officials say transformers installed in open fields for irrigation and drinking water projects are particularly vulnerable. Although the authority has started welding transformers to deter thieves, criminals have been cutting through the welds.
Police and NEA officials have called for stronger surveillance and greater community involvement to prevent further thefts.
