Kathmandu, December 10
A study team commissioned by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has formally recommended for a two-day weekend system so that the government gives public holidays two days a week.
For the past few months, Tourism Minister Yogesh Bhattarai had been advocating for this system arguing it would promote the travel culture among Nepalis so that the domestic tourism industry would thrive.
The team, also including representatives of the ministries of finance, home affairs, and general administration, says the government should introduce a two-day weekend system while encouraging the private businesses also for the same.
Besides offering help to the tourism industry, the system would also support the government in controlling public expenses, fuel consumption and boosting the workers’ productivity, according to the report.
Further, it has argued that 88 per cent of countries in the world have the two-day weekend system and adopting this model would help Nepal become compatible with them.
