Surunga Stream causing havoc in parts of Jhapa district, 45 houses under threat, ambulances stuck

A rain-swollen Surunga Stream has caused inundation along a stretch from Tulasibari Chok in Kankai municipality-5 to Chapramari in Jhapa district.

The stream has inundated one-kilometre-long stretch along Amarpath, a road which connects Suranga with Digalbank. The flooded stream has swept away part of the road and brought vehicular movement to a halt.

Sri Prasad Kharel, a local, said floodwater started gushing into settlements from 7 am. People are having a hard time negotiating the stretch, motorists are facing great difficulties wading through the swollen stream.

With the road shut, ambulances carrying patients have been stuck. Passengers heading to Jhapa Chok from Suranga Bazaar have been marooned.

The swollen river has put around 45 houses under threat. People have left their houses in search of safer places. On either side of the road, 200 people have been waiting for the flooding to subside. Mohan Bayalkoti, a local, says discharge in the stream has only increased.
