The Supreme Court has issued an interim order against the government’s newly announced Kaligandaki diversion project.

The project advocated by CPN-UML leader and former finance minister Bishnu Paudel is already in controversy for the past few years as Lumbini and Gandaki provincial governments were for and against it respectively. A section of the river also works as a border between the two provinces.

A single bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana issued the verdict on Tuesday in response to a writ petition filed by Prakash Mani Sharma among others.

The bench also asked the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers among other defendants to explain why the project should not be scrapped.
