Twelve individuals are contesting for the position of Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University.
On May 20, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who also serves as the Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, formed a three-member Vice-Chancellor Selection and Recommendation Committee under the coordination of Co-Chancellor and Minister of Education, Raghuji Pant.
This recommendation committee is preparing to shortlist three candidates among the 12 applicants. All twelve names have been received, and their biodata has been reviewed.
“The shortlisting process within the recommendation committee has already taken place. Only the task of recommending three names remains,” said a source from the Ministry of Education, adding, “The final decision is still pending. Though twelve names have reached the committee, the real competition is among five professors.”
According to sources, the main contenders are, Prof. Dr. Binil Aryal, Prof. Dr. Yogendra Bahadur Gurung, Prof. Dr. Khadga KC, Prof. Dr. Upendra Koirala and Prof. Dr. Dilli Upreti.
The appointment process for a new Vice-Chancellor began after Vice-Chancellor Keshar Jung Baral resigned on March 28. Baral resigned after working for 13 months into his four-year term. His resignation was accepted by the Prime Minister and Chancellor Oli on April 10.
Following that, on April 15, PM Oli assigned the duties of Vice-Chancellor to Dean Prof. Dr. Khadga KC.
As per regulations, when the Vice-Chancellor’s position is vacant, the responsibility can be delegated for up to three months. Accordingly, KC was given the acting responsibility. As the three month tenure is approaching the end, the recommendation committee is preparing to submit three names.
The committee is expected to hold a meeting on Sunday evening to finalize the recommendations.
“The meeting of the recommendation committee is scheduled for today. It is likely that three names will be recommended,” the Ministry of Education source said.
