
Kathmandu, October 4
Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal is leaving for Tanzania today to lead a Nepali parliamentary delegation to the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The assembly is being held from October 5 to 9 in Arusha, Tanzania.
Aryal is scheduled to leave for Tanzania via Doha at 7 pm on Sunday on Qatar Airways flight QR645. The delegation includes his wife Ambika KC, House of Representatives member Rabin Mahato, National Assembly member Jhakku Prasad Subedi and Anjan Shakya.
Federal Parliament Secretary-General Padma Prasad Pandey, House of Representatives Secretary Prakash Adhikari, Federal Parliament Secretariat Joint Secretary Rekha Upadhyay Khanal and Speaker Aryal’s private secretary Madhu Mijar are also part of the delegation.
At the assembly, Aryal will address the general debate on the theme “Advancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusion, trust and opportunities.”
An “Urgent Parliamentary Action” has also been set as an emergency agenda item. Its main theme is “Addressing climate-related disasters and strengthening resilience in the Himalayan region and other vulnerable areas.” Nepal is preparing to table a proposal on the issue.
National Assembly member Jhakku Prasad Subedi will participate in the Asian Parliamentary Assembly under the IPU. Anjan Shakya will participate as a co-rapporteur from the Asia-Pacific region in the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development and in the Forum of Women Parliamentarians. Rabin Mahato will participate in the Forum of Young Parliamentarians.
The Nepali delegation is also scheduled to hold sideline meetings with delegations from various countries participating in the assembly.
Federal Parliament Secretary-General Padma Prasad Pandey will make a presentation at the meeting of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments on parliamentary system structures, funds and capacity building.
After participating in the 153rd IPU Assembly and related meetings, Speaker Aryal will travel to Kenya.
The Nepali delegation will make an official visit to the Kenyan Parliament at the invitation of Kenyan Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
The delegation is scheduled to return to Kathmandu on October 13 after completing the Kenya visit.
