Sharad Vesawkar retires, receives ‘Guard of Honour’

Kathmandu, November 9

Nepali all-rounder Sharad Vesawkar has announced his retirement from international cricket. He retired following Nepal’s participation in the ongoing Hong Kong Sixes tournament.

Sharad had earlier informed that he would retire after this competition. Following Nepal’s exit from the Hong Kong Sixes, he was given a ‘Guard of Honour’ in recognition of his contribution. Sharad also posted on social media, writing “Signing off.”

Although appointed captain for the tournament, Sharad did not play in the two group-stage matches. He featured only in the Bowl League’s first game against Sri Lanka, where he was dismissed for just one run. He did not play against India or the UAE.

Sandeep Jora captained Nepal in the remaining matches and expressed gratitude to Sharad for his invaluable contribution to Nepali cricket.

The 37-year-old made his debut for Nepal’s U-15 national team in 2002 and joined the senior national team in 2004, making his debut against the UAE.

Sharad played a pivotal role in helping Nepal qualify for its first-ever T20 World Cup in 2014, where he also represented the country. He was also part of Nepal’s squad that played its first One Day International (ODI) match in 2018.

Having contributed to Nepali cricket for over two decades, Sharad has also won several domestic titles as a captain.

Among his 2014 World Cup teammates, then-captain Paras Khadka now serves as the Secretary of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), while former vice-captain Gyanendra Malla is currently the national team’s assistant coach. Likewise, Binod Bhandari and Sompal Kami remain active players, with Sompal continuing as a regular member of the national squad.
