Nepali social activist Sunita Danuwar has received the prestigious ‘Trafficking in Persons Hero-2018’ award for her contribution to the fight against human trafficking, in the United States of America.
Danuwar is the cofounder of Nepali NGO, Shakti Samuha that works towards helping the trafficked victims and survivors.
US President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump and United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo handed over the award to Danuwar amid a programme organised at the US Department of State recently.
The US government chooses activists from around the globe and provides the prestigious award to every year. Till date, more than 110 persons have received the award since 2001.
Earlier, Shakti Samuha Founder Charimaya Tamang had also received the award in 2011.
Other Nepali awardees include Lalitpur District Court Judge Tek Narayan Kunwar in 2014, Bhim Lama, Ganesh Shrestha, and Kumar Giri of Esther Benjamin’s Memorial Foundation in 2008, and Superintendent of Police Kiran Bajracharya in 2006 received the award so far.
