Senior Maithili litterateur Revati Raman Lal (PhD) has died at the age of 83. He died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Janakpurdham on Saturday evening, according to his family.
Lal, who held a PhD in Maithili, was a retired employee of Nepal Rastra Bank. He made significant contributions to various literary genres, including short stories, poetry, songs, essays, screenplays, interviews, travelogues and folk literature. His first published Maithili work, the song Saraswati Vandana, was published in 1960.
His major works include Sakshatkar, Madhav Nahi Aela Madhupursan, Hamar Bidesh Bhraman, Mahakavi Vidyapati and Khissa Pihani. He was also the writer of the television serial Vidyapati and editor of the Maithili quarterly Naimikanan.
For his contribution to literature, he received several honours, including the Mithila Ratna, Jyotirishwar Literary Award, Provincial Talent Award and Nepal Vidyapati Maithili Language-Literature Award.
Lal had been residing at his home in Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City-11. He was born on March 2, 1943, in Khirkhiria village of the former Devadiha Village Development Committee-3 in Dhanusha.
