The Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event held in July announced Samsung’s next step in AI. The event featured the sixth generation of Samsung’s Flip and Fold smartphones; the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, the smartwatch series including the new Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy Watch7, the earbuds series including the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 and the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro and the new fitness ring Samsung Galaxy Ring.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 launched last year had some significant changes from its predecessor the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4. The Flip6 also gets major updates and upgrades from the Flip5 including a chipset, better main camera, larger battery size and display features.

Galaxy AI has been the main focus of the Samsung Flip and Fold smartphones this year. The major improvement in AI has helped get the attention of Flip and Fold smartphones. With the recent marathon in smartphone AI integration, Samsung has proved itself quite useful.

Design and Display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 has a design similar to the Galaxy Z Flip5, with a few tweaks. The Flip6 has a less bulged hinge, allowing it to fold flat for a premium look. It is thinner than the Flip5 but weighs the same, even with a larger battery. The back is made up of glass and the frame is made up of Armour Aluminium. The Flexhinge has a new design that has helped reduce the visible crease on the main display when unfolded while enhancing durability through a strengthened Armour Aluminium build.

The cover display design of the Flip6 is the same as the Flip5. The camera rings on the other hand have a slight change with the rings, the same as the frame colour. It gives a modern funky touch to the flip phone. The Flip6’s main display is a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED 2X with a resolution of 2640 x 1080 (FHD+), a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a peak brightness of 2600 nits. It supports a colour depth of 16M. The cover display is a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED with a resolution of 720 x 748, a refresh rate of 60 Hz, and a peak brightness of 2600 nits. This display also supports a colour depth of 16M.

Both displays feature Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 with better scratch resistance. The Flip6 also features a better IP rating of IP48 dust and water resistance. It is better than the Flip5 which only had the IPX8 rating.

Performance and Storage

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset built on a 4nm process. Its CPU is an octa-core configuration, consisting of one 3.3 GHz Cortex-X4 core, three 3.2 GHz Cortex-A720 cores, two 3.0 GHz Cortex-A720 cores, and two 2.3 GHz Cortex-A520 cores. The graphics is handled by the Adreno 750 GPU.

The Flip6 runs on One UI 6.1.1 based on Android 14. The flip smartphone is set to receive 7 years of software updates and 7 years of security updates which is a big plus point. For memory, it comes with 12GB of RAM paired with 256GB of internal storage.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 also features the first vapour chamber in a Galaxy Z Flip phone. The vapour chamber is 1.5 times larger than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra which helps the Flip6 cool during extensive use.

AI features

The Samsung Galaxy has got some new AI features to enhance the experience. The FlexWindow or the cover display allows for on-the-go functionality, providing Suggested Replies for quick messaging and access to Samsung Health updates, notifications and music controls. The AI-powered Photo Ambient feature changes the wallpaper based on time and weather, while FlexCam’s Auto Zoom automatically adjusts framing for hands-free photography.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 also serves as a personal interpreter with real-time transcription and translation of conversations. Chat Assist helps users to send messages directly from the FlexWindow with context-aware Suggested Replies. Samsung’s partnership with Google brings the Google Gemini app to the Flip phone, allowing users to chat with Gemini.

The Circle to Search feature lets users get Google Search results by circling an object or text. Live Translate offers real-time voice translation during calls across various apps. Transcript Assist transcribes recorded conversations into editable text. These AI features have been a great highlight of the Flip phone which is also featured on its sibling, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is equipped with an updated dual rear camera setup which includes a 50 MP main camera with an F1.8 aperture which helps click detailed and sharp images. Accompanying this is a 12 MP ultra-wide camera with an F2.2 aperture, offering a wider field of view. The camera system supports Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and Auto Focus for steady outputs. For video, the Galaxy Z Flip6 supports UHD 4K video recording at 30 fps and 60 fps and 1080p videos at 60 fps. It can also record slow-motion videos at 240fps in Full HD and 120fps in Full HD.

On the front, a 10 MP camera with an F2.2 aperture handles selfies and video calls. The front camera records 4K videos at 30fps and 1080p videos at 30fps and 60fps.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 also has AI features baked into its camera. It includes Auto Zoom in FlexCam mode, allowing for hands-free selfies and previews on the FlexWindow. The ProVisual Engine enhances photos, ensuring vibrant colours and details in both daytime and nighttime shots through Nightography. Photo Assist offers creative editing options like Generative Edit to move and resize objects in photos and Live Effect for adding depth to images. Instant Slow-mo allows users to emphasize key moments in videos by applying slow-motion effects.

Battery and Others

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is powered by a 4000 mAh battery. The battery is 300 mAh larger than the Flip5. For charging it has a wide range of options; including 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse wireless charging capabilities. It features Wi-Fi support across 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax standards on 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz frequencies and Bluetooth version 5.3 for connectivity with other compatible devices. It operates on LTE and 5G networks supporting dual-SIM functionality with options for one physical SIM plus eSIM or dual eSIM configurations.

For audio, the Flip6 includes stereo speakers. The sensors include an accelerometer, barometer, fingerprint sensor, gyro sensor, geomagnetic sensor, hall sensor, light sensor and proximity sensor.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is available in Nepal in two colour options; blue and silver shadow.
