The most famous flip smartphone is Samsung’s Flip series. Last year Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 did quite well but still had some major problems like the hinge, small gap when folded and smaller cover screen. These are now fixed with the introduction of the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5. The Flip5 now has a larger cover screen and a new hinge making it fold completely flat.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 was unveiled alongside the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, Tab S9+, Tab S9 and Samsung Watch 6 series in the Samsung Unpacked Event held on July 26. This is the second unpacked event by Samsung this year after the one in February where Samsung introduced its flagship S23 series.

Let us see what changes it has in terms of specs from last year.

Design and display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 retains its sleek design with few major changes. The most significant improvement lies in the redesigned hinge, which now allows the phone to fold completely flat, eliminating the gap present in the previous Galaxy Z Flip4.

This improved hinge addresses concerns of bulkiness and dust particle interference, creating a more streamlined and reliable flip phone.

The Z Flip5 can lie completely flat when folded, thanks to its redesigned hinge, which is now slimmer. This improvement not only reduces the gap between the screens but also greatly decreases the chances of dust entering the device.

Another significant improvement in the Z Flip5 is the larger cover screen. Samsung calls it a “Flex Window” and is an end-to-end cover screen. However, it is not completely an end-to-end cover screen like the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra which includes the whole first half of the flip phone. The Flex Window looks like a folder logo. It is now 3.4 inches in size, which is significantly larger than the 1.9-inch cover screen of the previous generation. The Flex Window has a resolution of 720 x 748 pixels, and it is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

The Flex Window cover screen on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 offers a versatile experience. It allows users to reply to messages, make calls, check the weather, and access their wallets. Crisscross gestures simplify navigation, while Multi Widget View ensures easy access to installed widgets. Customisation options allow the users to personalise the Flex Window to their liking, making the Galaxy Z Flip5 a huge improvement over last year’s Flip4.

On the front, the phone has equal bezels on all sides with a centre hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. The main screen features a Foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, with a 120Hz refresh rate and support for HDR10+. The panel is 6.7-inch in size which accounts for approximately 85.5 per cent of the device’s screen-to-body ratio. It has a resolution of 1080 x 2640 pixels with a pixel density of 426 pixels per inch.
