Ready to meet Dr Govinda KC’s demands, but the ball is in leftists’ court: Government

Dr Govinda KC breaks his 11th fast-unto-death on the 23rd day, on Tuesday, August 15, 2017.

Kathmandu, October 11

The government says it is ready to address demands raised by Dr Govinda KC. However, it says the CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre should make a decision on in what form they would like to pass the Medical Education Bill.

Demanding the endorsement of bill as suggested by the Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led panel, Dr KC has been staging his 13th fast-unto-death for last one week.

The major bone of contention between the parties about the bill is whether new medical colleges should be established in Kathmandu Valley in next 10 years, which has forced the bill to get stuck in the House for months.

Former Health Minister and Nepali Congress leader Gagan Thapa says the Ministry of Education is ready to meet all demands of Dr KC including moving ahead the bill as demanded by the fasting doctor.

“If this happens, not only the fasting will end, but also all major problems of the medical education sector will be over.”

The UML and Maoists have not made any comment over the government’s readiness to meet the demands.

But, an official at the Ministry says the government will try to table the bill for endorsement at the House meeting called for Thursday.

If the Congress really wants to endorse the bill and address Dr KC’s demands, it can garner majority support from other parties except the UML and Maoists.
