Province 5: Nepali Congress nominates new lawmaker to replace deceased leader

The main opposition party in Province 5 Assembly, the Nepali Congress, has nominated a new leader as a member of the assembly. The Election Commission also subsequently endorsed the nomination and announced that Shankar Giri has been elected as the assembly member.

A meeting of the commission held on Sunday decided that Giri was elected to the position, informs its spokesperson Raj Kumar Shrestha. The decision, however, is yet to be published in the gazette. Hence, Giri has not taken the oath of office and secrecy yet.

The party’s one position in the assembly was vacant after the death of Baladev Sharma Pokharel, who was also the leader of the Congress parliamentary party in the assembly, in January. Since Pokharel was elected in the proportional representation category, the party had to recommend one from the party’s proportional representation category candidate list to replace him.
