Police unlock Bir Hospital, but protesting doctors refuse to enter

A Bir Hospital doctor examines a patient outside the hospital building as a part of protest, in Kathmandu, on Wednesday, April 10, 2019.

Kathmandu, April 10

Police used force to unlock Bir Hospital in Kathmandu on Wednesday in its bid to end a protest launched by the Government Doctors Association Nepal against the federal government’s new rule that government doctors work under provincial and local governments.

The Association members, however, refused to enter the hospital building. Rather, they have started taking care of the patients on the premises.

Bir Hospital’s Director Dr Kedar Senchuri says the hospital administration requested police to unlock the door.

The official further informs that the doctors have begun taking care of OPD patients only, but refusing to carrying out other assignments including surgery.

He says the hospital administration has requested the Ministry of Health to take initiatives to solve the issue through talks and the ministry’s response is positive.

Meanwhile, GoDAN President Dr Dipendra Shrestha also reiterated that the solution should be sought through talks and police should not use force to suppress their protests.
