Police arrest 5, including ward officials, for blocking a rape case from reaching court

Kailali, January 9

Police in the Kailali district of Suduraschim have arrested five people including locally elected representatives settling a rape case in the Ghodaghodhi municipality of the district thereby blocking the case from the court.

The spokesperson of the Kailali District Police Office, DSP Bedh Prakash Joshi, says police arrested Prakash Subedi, Laxmi Rudra Neupane, Hom Prakash Subedi, Yagya Raj Acharya and Raju Bhattarai on charges of trying to settle a rape case.

A 77-year-old woman in Ghodaghodi was allegedly raped on December 1, 2021. Her son was on his way to report the incident to the police when the people arrested along with other locals stopped him as they tried to settle the case secretively.

The family of the alleged rapist offered the survivor’s family Rs 300,000 to keep things a secret, informs a police official. But, as the survivor did not receive the entire amount, the family went to the police to file a complaint. The survivor’s son told police he only received Rs 200,000.

This is not the first time such a thing has happened. A girl’s family was offered 11.6-gram gold to keep the incident a secret.
