POCO M6 5G: Is the budget 5G phone any good?

The POCO M series, known for its popular budget smartphones, has introduced the latest addition to the lineup, succeeding last year’s POCO M5—the POCO M6 5G. The POCO M5 was well-received as a competitive budget option among other smartphones in the market.

The recent trend and smartphones from POCO are rebranded Redmi phones. The M6 is also the rebranded Redmi Note 13C 5G. From the chipset, camera and dimensions everything is the same. Many POCO fans who appreciate the POCO with a flagship killer title have not liked this trend.

Let us see what the smartphone provides in terms of specs.

Design and Display

The POCO M6 5G has the same design as the Redmi 13C 5G. The only visible difference is the black rectangular bar in the rear camera module and the POCO branding. The back and the frame are made up of plastic. The edges are rounded whereas the flat back gives a smooth finish. The frame has a shiny metal finish. The display has a drop-notch cutout on the front that houses the selfie camera. The bezels are decent for the price range. Furthermore, the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

The POCO M6 5G has a 6.74-inch screen which has about 83.7% of the phone’s screen-to-body ratio. The screen uses an IPS LCD technology that supports a refresh rate of 90Hz for smoother visuals. It has a brightness of 450 nits (typical) and a peak brightness of 600 nits which ensures good visibility during harsh lighting conditions. It has a resolution of 1,600 x 720 pixels, giving a 20:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of around 260 ppi.

Performance and Storage

Like the Redmi 13C 5G, the POCO M6 5G has a MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ 5G chipset built on a 6-nm architecture. It has an octa-core CPU configuration with two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.2 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. It houses Mali-G57 MC2 GPU to handle graphics for gaming and multimedia experience. It runs on MIUI 14, based on the Android 13 operating system.

The POCO M6 5G has three RAM configurations; 4GB, 6GB and 8GB. The 4GB and the 6GB RAM option are paired with 128GB of storage whereas the 8GB option is paired with 256GB of storage.

The 8GB RAM also has a virtual RAM feature allowing to addition of 8GB more RAM using the internal storage of the smartphone. It also has a dedicated MicroSD card slot for expandable storage.

Camera

The POCO M6 5G has a dual rear camera setup which includes a 50MP lens with an aperture of f/1.8 and a 28mm wide-angle with PDAF support. The main camera is supported with an auxiliary 0.08MP lens. The rear camera has features like photo, video, portrait, night and pano. The rear camera records videos at 1080p resolution at 30fps. On the front, it houses a 5MP camera that also records 1080p videos at 30 fps.

Battery and Others

The POCO M6 5G has a 5,000 mAh non-removable battery which on mediocre use can last a day. It has support for up to 18W charging. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac for internet connection and Bluetooth 5.3 for device pairing. It has support for LTE and 5G networks and dual SIM for enhanced network functionality.

For audio, it features a mono speaker and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It includes sensors such as a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, compass, and virtual proximity sensing.

The POCO M6 5G is available in two colour options; Galactic Black and Orion Blue.

The POCO M6 5G can be expected soon in Nepal for Rs 16,000 for the 4/128GB option, Rs 18,000 for the 6/128GB options and Rs 21,000 for the 8/256GB option.
