Past court rulings show House dissolution unconstitutional: UML Leader Pokharel

Kathmandu, October 30

CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has said the recent dissolution of the House of Representatives is unconstitutional, citing previous Supreme Court verdicts.

Speaking at a press conference in Dang on Thursday, Pokharel recalled that when the UML-led government previously dissolved the House, the Supreme Court ruled that such a move was invalid as long as a government could still be formed from the existing parliament.

“If we accept that past decision, how can the current dissolution be constitutional?” he asked. “Either the Supreme Court’s verdicts are politically influenced or the same legal principle should apply again.”

Pokharel said the party would wait for the court’s verdict before deciding its future course. “Our party will move ahead based on the court’s ruling,” he said. “If the parliament is reinstated and all parties agree, we can go for early elections while addressing the demands of the Gen-Z movement.”

He criticised the government for failing to show practical commitment to holding elections, claiming it has discouraged political gatherings under the pretext of maintaining law and order.

Pokharel also pointed to the government’s inability to control escaped prisoners or recover stolen weapons, saying these issues are linked to election preparedness. “Such actions do not help create an environment for elections,” he remarked.
