Kathmandu, June 9

In the wake of a new rule imposed on jaywalkers, the Development Committee in Parliament has directed the government to pain zebra crossing every 120 metres along major city roads.

The Committee also directed the government to construct pavements wherever necessary.

From May 30, the traffic police have been charging Rs 200 to pedestrians crossing roads from points other than zebra crossings or overhead bridges. Those failing to pay the penalty have to take police classes on the road for three hours.

The new rule has been widely criticised by stakeholders and members of the public.

In this context, the Committee’s meeting today directed traffic police, the Department of Transport Management and the Department of Roads to have sufficient zebra crossings and pavements within next two months.

Likewise, traffic police have also been instructed to install traffic lights at crossings of major cities within next five months.
