With the early warning system in place, no human casualty has been reported due to floods in Kanchanpur district this year. The district emergency operation, which was centre was set up by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, measured the water level in major rivers in the district and alerted the people on time.
Mahesh Ghimire of Nepal Red Cross Society shared that when it rains in the hilly areas, including the Chure region, the emergency operation centre informs the staffs to measure water level in the lower reaches of rivers. “After the measurement, information is spread via various media, so that preventive measures are taken,” he added.
Before the river reaches the alert point, settlements near the river are alerted using siren and speakers. Along with that, a medical and a rescue task force is kept on standby.
