Kathmandu, November 6

Nick Ashton-Hart, a member of the United Nations Data Governance Working Group and an international expert on artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity policy, has arrived in Nepal.

He arrived on Thursday to take part in the National AI Summit 2026, to be held on Saturday at Hotel Himalaya in the capital. Prabesh Subedi, chair of the Digital Media Foundation, the summit’s organiser, said Hart is the event’s keynote speaker.

According to Subedi, Hart will speak on how countries such as Nepal can find their place in the global AI race. His talk will cover the global AI race, digital sovereignty, and the strategic potential and challenges of AI in Nepal.

Hart has long been active in shaping global policy on digital technology, international trade, digital governance and cybersecurity. For more than two decades, he has played a leading role in digital economy and technology policy, working with UN member states, multinational companies and international organisations.

The one-day conference is titled “From Promise to Progress: Upscaling Nepal’s AI Capacity.”

The organisers said it will bring together AI and technology experts, policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, media professionals and representatives of other sectors from Nepal, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Singapore.
