Kathmandu, October 6

Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Deep Kumar Upadhyay, has resigned from his position citing he will contest upcoming House of Representatives elections as a Nepali Congress candidate.

Upadhyay submitted his resignation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday and Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara forwarded the paper to Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba today, according to an official at the Ministry.

He is likely to contest the polls from his home district of Kapilvastu.

Upadhyay had left active politics after he lost the 2013 parliamentary elections in Kapilvastu Constituency 1 before he was appointed the ambassador by Congress President Sushil Koirala-led government.

He, however, was recalled by the KP Sharma Oli-led government; but Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s government reappointed him to the position around 11 months ago.
