Nepali peacekeeper dies in Congo attack

Kathmandu, April 6

A Nepali soldier deployed in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo of Central Africa.

The Nepal Army has identified the victim as Anil Gurung, a resident of Gurmakot-14 of the Surkhet district in Kailali. He was injured in a rebel attack from an unknown place on Tuesday. He was airlifted immediately but died during treatment.

Nepal Army Chief Prabhu Ram Sharma has expressed condolences on the death on behalf of the entire organisation.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has also condemned the attack and expressed condolence on the death of the Nepali soldier.

“The secretary-general expresses his deepest condolences to the family of the fallen peacekeeper, as well as to the Government and the people of Nepal,” his spokesperson says in a statement, “The secretary-general recalls that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute a war crime. He calls on the Congolese authorities to investigate this incident and swiftly bring those responsible to justice.”
