Nepali Congress forces PHSC to postpone Thapaliya’s hearing

A meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee, in Kathmandu, on Wednesday, August 1, 2018.

Kathmandu, March 31

The main opposition Nepali Congress on Sunday forced the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee to postpone the scheduled meeting that would start the hearing with Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya recently nominated for the Chief Election Commissioner.

The party has objected to the nomination as it was made in the absence of Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is an ex-officio member of the Constitutional Council.

Now, the PHSC would hold its next meeting at 2 pm on Tuesday, according to PHSC members.

During the meeting today, Congress leaders demanded that the meeting be postponed by 10 days as they should discuss the nomination with Deuba, who is currently out of the capital.

Jitendra Dev clarified that they were objecting to the process of nomination, but not the nominee.
