Nepali Congress accuses govt of influencing Election Commission in the run-up to polls

Pushpa Bhusal

Kathmandu, August 26

The main opposition Nepali Congress has accused the government of trying to influence the Election Commission in the run-up to the by-elections scheduled for November 30.

The party says the government should not have transferred various staff as the date for the by-elections has already been announced.

The party’s whip Pushpa Bhusal sought special time during the House of Representatives meeting on Monday and objected to the recent transfer of 76 joint secretaries. She also claimed the government violated its own policy about promoting senior joint secretaries to the positions of provincial secretary. Likewise, some people were favoured and some were discriminated against in the transfer, according to her.

She informed the House some joint secretaries of the Election Commission had also been transferred.
