Starting this year, the Nepal Sambat date will be printed on Nepali banknotes.
The decision was announced during a press conference organised by the Shankhadhar Sakhwa Foundation in Bhaktapur on Sunday. The official declaration will be made on Wednesday, the first day of Nepal Sambat 1146, during a garlanding ceremony at the statue of Shankhadhar Sakhwa by Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
Foundation chairperson Gyanram Shrestha said the Prime Minister agreed to the inclusion during discussions and that the formal announcement will be made at Wednesday’s event. “Nepal Sambat is not only of the Newa community but of the entire nation,” he said.
The program will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Karki, followed by the garlanding of Shankhadhar Sakhwa’s statue. Former chairperson Shyamkrishna Manandhar said preparations for the event have been completed, adding that the program will also highlight Sakhwa’s contributions and the significance of Nepal Sambat in Nepal and abroad.
