Kathmandu, October 27

Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom Kathmandu expects to welcome ‘soon’, will not be coming to Nepal this year, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said.

The Prime Minister, who was talking to editors of leading media houses in the country, said he popped the question to the Chinese President more than once, during the recently concluded BRICS-BIMSTEC outreach meeting in Goa .

“I asked the President, both formally and informally about his prospective visit to Nepal,” said the Prime Minister. During the formal talks, Xi said he would visit Nepal soon, but during informal meetings, he said his visit would not be possible, at least this year.

Prachanda also said that the Chinese side wanted to sign bilateral agreements with Nepal on Indian soil itself, but Nepal refused. He said that the Nepali delegation insisted any bilateral deal can be signed only in Beijing or in Kathmandu.

President Xi had been expected to come to Kathmandu ahead of his trip to Goa. But the Chinese leader chose to go to Bangladesh instead. Nepali sources say this happened because of lack of preparation on the part of formal diplomatic channels between the two countries.
