Kathmandu, January 8
Nepal has imported over 1 million kilos of onions from China in the last five months after India, the major supplier of onions to the country, imposed a ban on exports amid rising prices and dwindling stocks.
Of the 1.8 million kilos of onions imported to Nepal in the last five months, a million came from the northern neighbour. According to official figures, traders spent Rs 80 million importing onions from China.
According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Development Committee, Chinese onions are now priced at up to Rs 98 in the wholesale market 125 in the retail market even as traders declare the price to be around Rs 77 at the border customs.
