Kathmandu, January 12

Nepali lawyers’ umbrella organisation, Nepal Bar Association, on Friday defended Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli, in relation to charges labelled on him by senior medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC.

Expressing its opinion over the dispute today, the Central Committee of the umbrella body also said Dr KC should end exerting pressure on the independent judiciary by staging different forms of protests including fast-unt0-death.

Demanding resignation of CJ Parajuli, the senior orthopaedic surgeon is on an indefinite hunger strike since Monday. It is his 14th fast-unto-death in recent few years.

The Association said fairly commenting on the court decisions could be acceptable, but charging someone personally and using ‘indecent’ language would be wrong.

The organisation warned that such practices would develop a wrong trend in the future.

The Association, however, welcomed the Supreme Court order to release Dr KC, who was arrested following its previous order in relation to a contempt of court case filed against him, on a general date, without bail.
