Nepal Army official appointed UNDOF Force Commander

Kathmandu, February 26

Nepal Army Major General Ishwar Hamal has been appointed the Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Golan Heights.

The UN Secretary General António Guterres made the appointment on Monday, the Nepal Army informs. Hamal is the seventh NA official to achieve this position in the UN peacekeeping missions. Incumbent Chief of Army Staff Purna Chandra Thapa was also a force commander in a peacekeeping mission.

Officers from 40 countries have competed for the position in Golan Heights, it has been learned.

Another Nepali official, Lieutenant General Shiva Ram Kharel, was the force commander in the mission in June 2019. Guterres’ secretariat says the top UN official has thanked Kharel for successfully completing the assignment.
