The Prachanda government’s decision to appoint Kul Man Ghising as managing director of Nepal Electricity Authority has riled the authority’s department chiefs.

The directors said they boycotted a meeting that newly-appointed MD Ghising had called at 10 am on Sunday over the appointment of a junior as their boss. Not even 70 per cent of department chiefs attended the meeting.

Our dissatisfaction is but natural as the minister concerned has appointed a person, who is junior to us, as NEA chief, a deputy executive director told Onlinekhabar.

Department chiefs had taken leave following Ghising’s appointment as executive director.

NEA has eight directorates and deputy executive directors head them. At Sunday’s meeting, only three acting deputy executive directors were present — Shanti Laxmi Shakya, Lekhnath Koirala and Jagdishwor Man Singh.

According to a source, chief of the NEA’s Power Generation Directorate Sher Singh Bhat, chief of Tanahun Hydropower Sunil Dhungel, chief of Transmission Directorate Kanhaiya Manandhar, among others, were not present at the meeting.

Also absent were Surendra Raj Bhandari, chief of Project Management Directorate, Gopal Babu Bhattarai, chief of Distribution and Customer Service Directorate, and Rajib Sharma, chief of Engineering Directorate.

Ghising said chiefs of directorates could not attend the meeting as they were on leave.

Ghising succeeded Mukesh Kafle, who resigned in the wake of ‘criticism’ over his poor performance.
