NEA completes construction of 30 substrations in one year, scales up 29 others

Dhalkebar substation

Kathmandu, July 26

The government-run electricity production and distribution entity, Nepal Electricity Authority, says it completed the construction of 30 new substations across the country in the recently completed fiscal year 2018/19. This is the biggest number of substations constructed within one year, according to the Authority.

On the other hand, it also increased the capacity of 29 other substations.

The new substations in total have a capacity of 707.5 MVA. They are capable of supplying 707 megawatt power.

Of them, Dhalkebar substation has the capacity of 220 KV (330 MVA), other eight have the capacity of 132 KV each. Other 21 have the capacity of 33 KV each.

Likewise, the Authority increased the capacity of 29 other substations of 444.35 MVA capacity. They can supply additional 1,150 megawatt power in total.

The Authority’s Managing Director Kul Man Ghising says the Authority has moved forward efforts to complete construction and strengthen and expand the distribution system as a campaign. He says scaling up the substations and constructing the new ones will be imperative for the establishment of new industrial zones and corridors in the future.

Likewise, the country’s electricity distribution system is still weak in terms of quality though the regular power outage has ended. Scaling up of the substations will address those concerns too, according to him.
