NCP seeks Deputy Speaker’s resignation, to appoint new speaker and deputy after by-election

Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe

Kathmandu, November 7

Nepal Communist Party is planning to ask Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe to resign from her post. The ruling party is planning to do so as the constitution states that the speaker and deputy-speaker must be from different parties.

NCP, to make sure the speaker is from their own party, is asking Tumbahamphe to resign as deputy speaker. However, sources say that Tumbahamphe has said she will not resign until she is guaranteed the speaker’s position.

However, other NCP leaders are also staking their claim for the vacant post. Along with Tumbahamphe, the party chief whip Dev Gurung and standing committee members Agni Sapkota, Pampha Bhusal, and Lekhraj Bhatta have been lobbying to become the House Speaker, says an NCP source.

The party’s co-chair, PM KP Sharma Oli, and Pushpa Kamal Dahal have not talked about. The party officials say that the post will be filled after the by-election.

The ruling party though has not decided regarding the post of deputy speaker. However, sources have told Onlinekhabar that NCP will not be giving the position to Nepali Congress.

The post of the House Speaker has remained vacant ever since former speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned after he was accused of sexually attacking a parliament staffer. Since then Mahara has been arrested by police.
