The Road Division Office is turning to a specialised technique to find a long-term solution after landslides continued at Tuilkhola, on the Narayangadh–Muglin road section.
Since large boulders falling from above have caused blockages not just during the monsoon but through winter as well since last year, crews are now clearing the loose rock, shaping the slope, and preparing to apply “nailing”, driving rods or nails into the cliff face to stabilise it.
Road Division, Bharatpur, said a horizontal drain will also be installed alongside the nailing work to channel out seeping water, combined with bioengineering techniques.
Chief Engineer Narayan Prasad Lamichhane of Road Division, Bharatpur, said large boulders from above are currently being cut and cleared.
“For the past seven days we’ve been cutting and removing the large rocks from above. It’s difficult terrain, so only a small crew is working there right now,” he said. “Once the large boulders are cleared, we plan to bring in more workers and equipment to move the work forward.”
According to him, nailing will be the primary technique used to prevent landslides at the site. Depending on the nature of the slope, either two-dimensional or three-dimensional netting will be used alongside bioengineering measures.
Currently, workers are cutting into the landslide-prone slope and clearing rock to shape it, after which the nailing technique will be applied. Since standing and seeping water in the landslide zone weakens the terrain, a horizontal drain will also be set up to channel the water out.
“Nailing will mainly be used here. Depending on the slope’s condition, we’ll use dimensional netting and prioritise bioengineering,” he said.
Lamichhane added that nailing work is expected to begin within a month, and that once the large boulders above are cleared, the road should no longer face blockages.
On this stretch, vehicle movement is currently allowed for half an hour every two hours between 8:30 am and 6:00 pm, while vehicles run continuously from 6:00 pm to 8:00 am.
