Mother and son killed in Bara as police arrest family member

Kathmandu, January 28

Two members of the same family, a mother and her son, were killed in a suspected domestic crime in Bara district, police said. The victims’ daughter-in-law and another young man have been arrested in connection with the case.

The victims were identified as Sumitra Devi Mandal, 46, and her son Rameshwar Mandal, 24, who were found dead in Parwanipur Rural Municipality–1, Rahariyadi. According to Narendra Kunwar, Superintendent of Police at the Bara District Police Office, the two were attacked with a sharp weapon late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning and died at the scene.

The attack also left Jagroup Mandal, 50, the husband of Sumitra Devi, and the couple’s 22-year-old daughter, Rina Kumari Mandal, injured. Both are undergoing treatment at LSR Neuro Hospital in Parwanipur, police said.

Police have arrested the victims’ daughter-in-law and another man on suspicion of involvement in the killings. An investigating officer said the male suspect had returned to Nepal from Dubai on January 26 and travelled to Bara immediately after landing in Kathmandu.

Investigators suspect that the killings were carried out with the daughter-in-law’s involvement and planning. Police believe she had an extramarital relationship with the man who had recently returned from abroad, and that tensions escalated after the family became aware of the relationship.

“It appears the murders were planned following repeated disputes within the household,” the investigating officer informed Onlinekhabar, adding that further details would be confirmed as the investigation continues.
