More than 700 people have been arrested by police during protests in India demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
More than 700 people were reportedly arrested from Jantar Mantar in Delhi alone. The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) launched the protest on Thursday demanding Kumar’s resignation. Other established opposition parties had also been staging protests earlier.
Those arrested include students as well as several opposition leaders. According to BBC Hindi, Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, and former minister Saurabh Bharadwaj were among those arrested.
Rashtriya Janata Dal lawmaker Manoj Jha was also arrested by police at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Meanwhile, Indian Communist leader MA Baby was also arrested.
