More than 2,500 EVs stranded in Mustang

Mustang, October 14

More than 2,500 electric vehicles (EVs) have entered Nepal through the Korala Pass over the past two weeks. However, they remain stranded in Mustang, unable to reach their destinations due to disruptions along the Beni-Jomsom road caused by floods, landslides and river erosion following heavy rainfall in late August.

Although the road reopened on Friday evening, its condition remains difficult, preventing the vehicles from proceeding to their destinations.

According to the Armed Police Force (APF) Border Outpost (BOP) at Nhechung, located in Lomanthang-4 near the Nepal-China border at Korala Pass, more than 2,000 electric vehicles are currently parked in an open area and at the Mustang Customs Yard in Nhechung.

Similarly, more than 500 electric vehicles that cleared customs at Korala and were transported to Jomsom remain parked at two locations in the area.

Deepak Budhathoki, a representative of BYD, said that although the Beni-Jomsom road had reopened, its precarious condition had prevented the EVs in Jomsom from proceeding to their destinations.

He added that more than 2,000 BYD vehicles of various models that entered Nepal through the Korala border had been stranded in Mustang since heavy rainfall blocked the road.

Meanwhile, Police Inspector and Information Officer Santosh Basyal said that more than 600 containers carrying goods imported through the Korala border had left the district for their destinations by Monday.

He added that as the containers previously held up in the district departed, some empty containers had headed towards the Korala border to transport additional goods.
