Modi government attempt to internationalise Madhesh issue has come a cropper in the United States, says CPN-Masal

Kathmandu, June 10

The CPN-Masal said on Friday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic effort to internationalise the Madhesh issue has failed.

In a press release, Mohan Bikram Singh, general secretary of the party, said: During his meeting with US President (Barack Obama), Modi had tried to come up with a joint statement on Nepal like the EU-India joint statement and the UK-India joint statement (during his visits to Brussels, the EU headquarters, and London, respectively. His idea was to point through a joint statement that Nepal’s constitution is incomplete as it has discriminated against the Madheshi people. But the US administration rejected this. This is a huge diplomatic defeat for the Modi government.

Modi’s plan to involve the US on Nepal’s constitution and Madhesh issue, and thus internationalise the issues, has hit a roadblock, he said.

It should be noted that William Todd, United States’ Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs, had called on Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at the latter’s office in Singhadurbar on Thursday. A host of issues like Nepal-US relations, post-quake reconstruction, constitution making as well as implementation and US assistance for Nepal’s economic development figured in the meeting. On the occasion, Todd hailed Oli government’s bid to implement the constitution and appeal to the international community for economic development of Nepal. He had pledged assistance towards the government’s efforts to address disgruntled political parties’ demands through talks. Todd expressed hope that talks will be able to sort out all problems.
