Mid-July 2020: Govt sets new deadline for Melamchi water project

The government on Thursday announced a new deadline to deliver the water from Melamchi of Sindhupalchok district to Kathmandu Valley under the much-delayed Melamchi Water Supply Project.

Minister for Water Supply and Sanitation Bina Magar announced that the government would bring the water to Sundarijal of Kathmandu for distribution by the end of this fiscal year in mid-July 2020.

The minister also issued a white paper on the project explaining the progress achieved so far and the next steps.

“It will take some more time to complete the construction of the dam, but we can bring water from an alternative dam before mid-July,” the project’s executive director Tiresh Prasad Khatri said, “I am confident that the contractors will complete all the required works in the next three months.” He informed that 97 per cent works of the project have been over now, and the government spent nearly Rs 28 billion on the project.
