Mayors in Kathmandu Valley want govt to dissolve KVDA

Mayors of various municipal governments of the Kathmandu Valley during a meeting.

Kathmandu, June 8

Municipal governments in the Kathmandu Valley have demanded that the federal government dissolve the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority claiming the authority interfered with their jurisdictions.

The Valley Municipality Forum, an alliance of mayors of the municipal governments in Kathmandu, issued a statement, urging the Ministry of Urban Development to dissolve the body. The forum’s leaders including Kathmandu Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya, Lalitpur Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan, and Madhyapur Thimi Mayor Madan Sundar Shrestha also met Urban Development State Minister Ram Bir Manandhar with the same demand.

The mayors have also claimed that the authority was established by the then King Birendra Shah in the late 1980s, which the 2015 constitution does not recognise.

The forum’s secretary Shrestha says the authority’s existence is also gainst the sentiments of federalism.
