Kathmandu, August 24
A man has been arrested for operating a ride-sharing service using a stolen scooter.
The arrested man has been identified as 39-year-old Saroj Khanal, a permanent resident of Damak Municipality-7, Jhapa, who had been living in New Bus Park, Kathmandu. He was arrested by traffic police.
Khanal reportedly became unreachable after a passenger travelling from Naxal to Bhaktapur Durbar Square accidentally left a laptop bag on his scooter.
The passenger informed traffic police and requested a search for the missing laptop. Police subsequently arrested Khanal at a hotel where he had been staying in New Bus Park.
According to police, questioning revealed that Khanal had been operating the ride-sharing service using another person’s ride-sharing account.
Police also found that he had allegedly stolen the scooter, bearing registration number Ba Pra 00-00 Pa 00, from Gongabu some time ago.
While searching for and returning missing motorcycles to their owners, Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police had found Khanal’s citizenship certificate inside the storage compartment of one of the motorcycles.
This has led police to suspect that Khanal had been involved in motorcycle theft for a long time and may have stolen other motorcycles as well. Further investigation is underway.
Traffic police have returned the recovered laptop to its owner.
