Kathmandu, May 29

Abinash Bikram Shah-directed Nepali movie Lori won a special mention award in the short film genre at Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.

This is the first time a Nepali film has made it to the main competition category and won an award at the renowned film festival.

Director Shah himself received the award.

Previously, the movie Chaukath had represented Nepal at the Cannes Festival‘s screening and exhibition categories.

Lori narrates the story of a mother who sings lullabies to her 12-year-old daughter in order to calm her down. But, when the lullabies end and the daughter comes to her senses, the reality turns out to be much grimmer, and life-altering.

Shah himself has written the script and the dialogues of the film where Ujjwal Kumar Bastakoti is the cinematographer. The movie features Ankita Yadav, Sujita Sah and Preeti Jha and is co-produced by Nepal’s Underground Talkies and Hong Kong’s Petra Films.

Here is the list of award winners at the Cannes Film Festival.
