Lawmakers propose cutting down jurisdiction of Nepal Police

Kathmandu, July 28

Lawmakers have proposed reducing roles and responsibilities of Nepal Police.

They have suggested that the Armed Police Force can be given the responsibility of maintaining peace and security whereas the Nepal Police restricted to investigating criminal cases.

Speaking at a meeting of the State Affairs Committee in Parliament on Sunday, lawmakers and former home ministers Janardan Sharma and Dilendra Prasad Badu floated the proposal. Former IGP and lawmaker Nawa Raj Silwal also supported the proposal.

“Let’s give the responsibility of airport security to Nepal Police because they need to arrest people, frisk people,” Sharma said, “But for other places where investigation is not necessary, we can keep the APF.”

Likewise, Badu highlighted that jurisdictions of Nepal Police and APF overlapped, hence a new set of roles and responsibilities is required for each.
