Kathmandu, August 18
Kathmandu University remains closed amid a strike by professors as vice-chancellor Ram Kantha Makaju, along with other top officials, travel to South Korea on Sunday without taking the initiative to re-open the varsity.
The staff of the university, which has been shut for the last 11 days, have criticised the high ranking officials for travelling abroad while the university remains shut. Makaju along with 10 other senior professors will only return on August 22. The visit was approved by the university’s council.
“It’s not even a major programme that they are attending. They’re just visiting some universities that’s all. This is quite wrong as they should be working to solve issues here first,” said a staff working at the university.
After staffers and teachers at the university refused to invigilate exams, the university had asked masters level students to invigilate a recently-held examination. Teachers and staff have said that they will only hold talks with the vice-chancellor. The Education Ministry has also given Makaju orders to hold talks with the teachers and re-open the university.
However, as Makaju leaves for the junket, no one knows when the university will re-open.
