Kathmandu, November 4

As incumbent governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, Chiranjibi Nepal, is retiring in March next year, the government has begun considering potential candidates for the top position of the central bank.

Whereas reports say there are many candidates among current and former officials of the central bank, Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada wants to pick his ministry’s current secretary Rajan Khanal for the position. A source at the ministry informs Khatiwada has already assured Khanal that he would be appointed the governor after four months.

Khatiwada is retiring as the finance secretary on February 22 the next year.

The source claims that minister Khatiwada did not have good experience with the incumbent governor Nepal as he was close to the main opposition Nepali Congress party. Hence, he wants the next governor to be close to him.

After Khanal’s retirement at the ministry, Khatiwada is planning to appoint current revenue secretary Shishir Kumar Dhungana as the finance secretary, the sources inform.
