Kathmandu, February 26

Officials say they have destroyed 15,000 chickens in Tarakeshwar of Kathmandu recently after some of them were found to have contracted bird flu.

Some ducks and turkeys in the area had been diagnosed with the disease some weeks before also, but this time chickens have also been infected.

Following that, 15,357 chickens including layers, broilers, and local chickens were destroyed, informs the Department of Livestock Development Spokesperson Chandra Dhakal. Some turkeys and quails were also destroyed, according to the department.

The department says the adjacent area has been disinfected.

Meanwhile, the government has appealed to the farmers to protect their livestock from contacting other birds and animals so as to avoid infection. The farmers have been told to contact nearby livestock offices in case the birds fall sick or die.
